​Hyperplasia is frequently associated with hypertrophy. The thickening of a blocked urinary bladder, for example, virtually invariably involves both smooth muscle cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Myometrial smooth muscle cells are expanded not only in quantity (hyperplasia) but also in size in a pregnant uterus (hypertrophy).
