What is Pathology - What is metaplasia, and how does it affect you?
Metaplasia is the process of one mature cell type being replaced by another. Squamous metaplasia, for example, occurs when bronchial stratified columnar epithelium is replaced by squamous epithelium in smokers. Barrett oesophagus, or intestinal metaplasia of the oesophagus, is most commonly caused by prolonged irritation by gastric secretions in gastroesophageal reflux.
