What is Pathology - What part do macrophages play in wound healing?
- Debris removal: During the early phases of wound healing, macrophages phagocytize cell debris and assist neutrophils in clearing the field. - Other cell recruitment: Macrophages attract other cells and are required for fibroblast and angioblast entrance into the wound. - Matrix production stimulation: Macrophages are a rich source of growth factors and interleukins that stimulate the formation of the ECM by fibroblasts and angioblasts. & Scar Remodeling: Macrophages release collagenases, stromelysin, and other lytic enzymes that destroy collagen and other matrix components, causing the entire field to be restructured. Simultaneously, macrophages and fibroblasts secrete tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which block the action of lytic enzymes, allowing the scar to restructure in a controlled manner.
