English Company Law – Companies Incorporated by Royal Charter
Royal Charter Incorporation A business can be established with a Royal Charter. Historically, such "chartered companies" were formed by the monarch personally using the Royal Prerogative, but today they are formed by the monarch with the advice of the Privy Council. The Bank of England, the Law Society, and the BBC are all instances of companies formed under Royal Charter. Modern charters are almost exclusively granted to bodies engaged in educational or charitable work (the most notable recent chartered company being the Recognition Panel, which is the approved regulator of the media recommended by the Leveson Report), with very few companies created by Royal Charter (only three in 2019).
