- erythropoitein secreting tumors such as renal cell carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, adrenal tumor, cerebellar hemangioma, uterine leiomyoma
--renal cyst or hydronephrosis 
-carboxyhemoglobin (smoking) 
-hypoxia such as cardiac disease, pulmonary disease, high altitude, 
-relative ( spurious ) polycythemia 
-essential thrombocytosis 
-myelofibrosis 
-chronic myelogenous leukemia
