What is ENT - Can you tell me about the utricle and the saccule? Can you tell me about the semicircular canals?
Both the utricle and the saccule are vestibular organs, and their primary function is to identify acceleration along a linear axis. The utricle is responsible for detecting accelerations in the horizontal direction, whereas the saccule is responsible for detecting accelerations in the vertical direction, including gravitational force. The rotational or rotating acceleration can be felt through the semicircular canals. There are three canals that are positioned in different planes. These canals are the lateral canal, the horizontal canal, the superior canal, and the anterior canal. The orientation of the vertical canals (superior and posterior) is approximately 45 degrees relative to the plane of the sagittal section, and the orientation of the horizontal canal is approximately 30 degrees anteriorly upward from the plane of the sagittal section.
