The main function of the masseter muscle is to elevate the mandible and bring the teeth into occlusion. It arises from the maxillary process of the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch. • The temporalis muscle, which inserts on the coronoid process and lifts and lowers the mandible, arises from the temporal fossa. • Medial pterygoid muscle: the superficial portion originates from the maxillary tuberosity and pyramidal process of the palatine bone, while the deep portion arises from the medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone. Both portions attach to the medial surface of the ramus and angle of the mandible. The mandible is raised as the main action. • The lower portion of the lateral pterygoid muscle originates from the lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone, while the upper portion originates from the infratemporal surface and crest of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. Both portions attach to the coronoid process of the mandible. The mandible is primarily depressed and protruded.
