Bacillus Cereus Infection
Bacillus cereus is a gram positive rod. Bacillus cereus infection may lead to infection of the intravenous catheter, food poisoning ( watery diarrhea and vomiting) and eye infection. Bacillus cereus virulence factor may include heat labile toxin. The heat labile toxin will stimulate adenylate cyclase which cause an elevation of cAMP which later lead to watery diarrhea.Heat labile toxin is associated with contaminated poultry and meat.Vomiting is related to heat stable toxin. Heat stable toxin is associated with fried rice. Bacillus cereus produce spores which may contaminated the poultry, meats or vegetables. The spores may survive and germinate at the room temperature. The prevention of bacillus cereus infection may include proper handling of food by heating food above 54 degree celsius and consider refrigeration. Fluid replacement is also consider. Vancomycin is considered in cases of traumatic eye infection.
