Kaposi Sarcoma
Kaposi sarcoma may present with bruised / discolored spots which later progress into ulcerated nodules mostly present on the oral cavity, face and skin. Kaposi sarcoma is commonly affecting AIDS patient. Kaposi sarcoma is a spindle cell tumor of the endothelial cells. Kaposi sarcoma is caused by human herpesvirus type 8. Human herpesvirus type 8 can be detected by DNA hybridization,polymerase chain reaction and in situ immunohistochemistry. Kaposi sarcoma is transmitted via semen and saliva. Human herpesvirus 8 may infect the endothelial cells and B lymphocytes. This will lead to latent infection of the B cells. Human herpesvirus 8 will encodes a cell growth regulatory genes which lead to cellular proliferation, angiogenesis while blocking the apoptosis. Human herpesvirus may also lead to AIDS associated B cell lymphoma ,primary effusion lymphoma, multicentric angiofollicular B cell lymphoproliferative disorder and multicentric Castleman disease. Kaposi sarcoma is the common cause of AIDS associated malignancy.
