Opportunistic Pneumonia
Opportunistic pneumonia is caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas aeruginosa may produce a few pigment such as pyoverdin (yellow green molecule) which fluorescent under ultraviolet light and procyanin which gives blue color. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an aerobic organism which may produce fruity aroma in the culture. Pseudomonas aeruginosa may be grown in a distilled water and present in the food, soil, water and plants. Pseudomonas aeurginosa may infect and contaminated hospital objects such as catheter. Pseudomonas aeruginosa contains virulence factors such as adhesions, anti phagocytic capsule, exoenzyme S (ADP- ribosylating toxin), exotoxin A ( A-B toxin which inhibit protein synthesis) and endotoxin. Patient may present with recurring cases of pneumonia mostly in cystic fibrosis. This occur due to cystic fibrosis producing mucus which inhibit ciliated clearance. Pseudomonas aeruginosa may also produce urinary tract infection due to indwelling catheter and wound infection in burn patient where the skin barrier is removed.
