Chronic inflammation is mediated by cells with a nonsegmented single nucleus, as opposed to acute inflammation, which is mediated by polymorphonuclear leukocytes with a segmented nucleus. Macrophages, lymphocytes, and plasma cells are all considered mononuclear cells.
