What is Pathology -Is it possible to reverse or repair cell injury induced by hypoxia or anoxia by giving the cells enough oxygen?
Oxygen will not be able to restore irreversibly injured cells. Oxygen, on the other hand, can increase the function of reversibly wounded cells that are still alive. Reoxygenation must be done with caution because it can produce so-called reperfusion injury if done too quickly. Oxygen-derived free radicals, which can develop under such settings, induce this type of damage. Restoring blood flow to a myocardium that has been made hypoxic by a coronary occlusion, for example, may result in reperfusion injury to still-living myocardial cells in the marginal zone of a myocardial infarction.
