​ Cytokines are multifunctional polypeptides that affect the function of other cells. They were first isolated from lymphocytes and given the name lymphokines. Interleukins (IL-1, IL-2, etc. ), interferons (alpha, beta, and gamma), tumour necrosis factor (TNF) (alpha and beta), and a number of chemotactic polypeptides known as chemokines are all examples of cytokines.
