What Is Pathology - What are cytokines, and what do they do?
Cytokines are multifunctional polypeptides that affect the function of other cells. They were first isolated from lymphocytes and given the name lymphokines. Interleukins (IL-1, IL-2, etc. ), interferons (alpha, beta, and gamma), tumour necrosis factor (TNF) (alpha and beta), and a number of chemotactic polypeptides known as chemokines are all examples of cytokines.
