What is Pathology - What are macrophages' primary functions?
Macrophages play a role in chronic inflammation, healing, and immunological responses, among other things. The following are macrophages' most important functions: -Macrophages contain surface receptors for IgG and C3, allowing them to easily phagocytize opsonized microorganisms. ----Macrophages can secrete complement and proteins (e.g., C1–C5), coagulation factors (e.g., factor VIII), bactericidal substances (e.g., properdin and lysozyme), proteases, cytokines and chemokines, arachidonic acid derivatives, oxygen radicals, and NO. -Antigen processing: Macrophages phagocytose or pinocytose foreign antigens and (if fluid) transmit the processed antigens to T and B cells.
