What is Pathology -What causes cell swelling when there is an ATP deficiency?
The cell volume is determined by the plasma membrane's ability to function effectively, which stays semipermeable only when properly powered with ATP. ATP fuels the Na/K ATPase, which operates as a pump to maintain the high sodium concentration in the intercellular fluid and the high potassium concentration inside the cell. An unregulated influx of salt and water from the extracellular space occurs if this ATPase fails due to an energy shortage. Cell swelling occurs as a result of a net increase in the total fluid content in the cytoplasm. Potassium seeps out of the cell, lowering the intracellular potassium content.
