What is Pathology - What causes the elevated ESR in inflammatory conditions?
The rate at which red blood cells separate from plasma 1 and 2 hours after blood is collected is a simple way to measure ESR. The sedimentation rate of erythrocytes is a rough estimate of changing plasma protein composition, particularly the content of albumin and the so-called acute-phase reactants, because it is dependent on the concentration and relative electric charge of plasma proteins. C-reactive protein, a1-antitrypsin, ceruloplasmin, fibrinogen, serum amyloid associated (SAA)–protein, and a few others are acute-phase reactants that rise in plasma. The concentration of C-reactive protein in blood can be measured using sensitive biochemical techniques. Instead of the usual ESR, these tests can be utilised.
