What is Pathology - What is suppurative inflammation, and how does it affect you?
Exudation of pus characterises suppurative or purulent inflammation. The semifluid, viscous liquid made up of dead and dying neutrophils, plasma proteins, and liquefied tissue debris is known as pus. An abscess is a pus-filled hollow that originates from localised tissue damage. Empyema is a pus collection in a preexisting body cavity (e.g., pleural cavity) or hollow organ (e.g., gallbladder empyema). Anatomic names for these lesions include pyosalpinx (pus in the fallopian tube), pyometra (pus in the uterine cavity), and pyonephrosis (pus in the kidney) (pus in the renal pelvis and calices).
