What is Pathology - What is the mechanism through which leukocytes bind to bacteria?
Bacteria adhere non specifically to the surface of moving leukocytes, just like any other substance. Body fluids wrap bacteria with opsonins (Greek for "condiment" or "delicacy") to promote leukocyte adhesion to potentially dangerous bacteria. Opsonin receptors on leukocytes allow them to bind to opsonized bacteria more efficiently than to other particles.
